Moldavia's History Museum within "Moldova" National Museum Complex

Moldavia's History Museum inherited the patrimony and traditions of two previous museums, which functioned in Iasi during the 2^nd decade of the 20^th century, the Antiquities Museum and the Municipal Museum.  

In 1954, the Museum was assigned the space of the west wing at the ground floor of the Palace of Culture. Nowadays, the Museum is an organization of national rank, due to its varied heritage, allowing the presentation of all historical epochs throughout the whole Carpatho-Danubiano-Pontic and European space. It was designed as a pilot-museum and consequent to its exeperience, the other history museums in Moldavia were opened later on.

The permanent exhibition in its present aspect was inaugurated in 1997, the display stressing the communication capacity of the original objects and not of the auxiliary materials and fabrics which would burden the museum discourse in the previous exhibit.

The Museum also comprises its own stores and library, as well as a hall for temporary exhibitions, known as the “Orest Tafrali” Room, according to the name of the founder of the Antiquities Museum.

Moldavia's History Museum publishes two scientific periodical magazines: Cercetari istorice and Buletinul "Ioan Neculce".

Nowadays, the Museum collections exceed the amount of 30.000 items, out of which many are of exceptional value and illustrative for the life of the human communities having lived on the East-Carpathian  territory starting with the Paleolithic. The permanent display includes 20 rooms spreading over the total surface of 1470 square meters.

Apart the permanent exhibition hosted in the Palace of Culture, the History Museum of Moldavia also administrates the following museum sites: the Union Museum at 16, Alexandru Lapusneanu Street, in Iasi, "Mihail Kogalniceanu" Memorial Museum, at 11, Mihail Kogalniceanu Street, in Iasi, "Al. I. Cuza" Memorial Palace of Ruginoasa, 63 km away from Iasi, on the  road Iasi-Pascani   the Archaeological Reserve of Cucuteni, in the commune of Cucuteni, within the county of Iasi, 10 km away from the town of Targu Frumos.
