"Centenial Corneliu Baba" Exhibition organized by the Art Museum
The Art Museum within “Moldova” National Museum Complex of Iasi announces the exhibition “Centennial Corneliu Baba” as a tribute to the artist’s activity. The opening will take place on 24 November 2006, at 18.00 hours, in the contemporary art gallery no 2, at the 1st floor of the Palace of Culture in Iasi.
Bringing together paintings and graphic works owned by both museum collections– the Art Museum in Iasi, “Vasile Parvan” Museum of Barlad, the Visual Arts Museum of Galati and the Art Museum of Constanta, and private collectors – the artist’s collection, dr. A. Teodorescu’s collection, dr. H. Aldea’s collection, the exhibition will be open to the public during the period November 2006 – March 2007 and is meant the point out the creative itinerary of one of the most representative artists.
Born in Craiova in 1906, Corneliu Baba attended the course of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of Bucharest and those of the Fine Arts Academy of Bucharest, simultaneously, during the period 1926-1930, and later on (1934-1938), he also attended the course of N. N. Tonitza within the Fine Arts Academy in Iasi. His works, exhibited in numerous events in Romania and abroad – Venice (1954, 1956), Tokyo, Berlin (1964), New York (1970), Moscow, Wien, Leningrad (1979), were rewarded with numerous distinctions such as: the State Prize (1953, 1954), Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Warsaw (1955), Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Book Illustration - Leipzig (1960), Prize for Portrait at the International Triennial of Engaged Art - Sofia (1973); title of Master Emeritus of Arts (1958), Member of Honour Arts Academy of U.S.S.R. (1968), Artist of the Romanian People (1962), Correspondent Member of the Romanian Academy (1963), Correspondent Member of the Arts Academy of Berlin (1964); Member of the Academy Tommaso Campanella of Rome (1970) etc.
Serving as a university professor in Iasi (starting with 1946) and in Bucharest (starting with 1958), Corneliu Baba’s ideal was to contribute to creating and developing the national culture and identity and the exhibition to open soon within the Art Museum of Iasi indicates the artist’s place and importance within the Pantheon of the Romanian values of all times.
